Derek Thompson, in an article published in the Atlantic<\/i><\/b><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(<\/i><\/em>https:\/\/medium.com\/the-atlantic\/social-distancing-is-not-enough-5c56e9301304<\/i><\/em><\/a>),<\/i><\/em>\u00a0had this to say:<\/p>\n

COVID-19 has mounted a sustained attack on public life, especially indoor life. Many of the largest super-spreader events took place inside \u2014 at a church in\u00a0South Korea<\/u><\/a>, an auditorium in\u00a0France<\/u><\/a>, a conference in\u00a0Massachusetts<\/u><\/a>. The danger of the indoors is more than anecdotal. A\u00a0Hong Kong paper awaiting peer review<\/u><\/a>\u00a0found that of 7,324 documented cases in China, only one outbreak occurred outside \u2014 during a conversation among several men in a small village.\u00a0The risk of infection indoors is almost 19 times higher than in open-air environments, according to\u00a0another study from researchers in Japan<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Appropriately, just about every public indoor space in America has been shut down or, in the case of essential businesses such as grocers, adapted for social-distancing restrictions. These closures have been economically ruinous, transforming large swaths of urban and suburban life into\u00a0a morbid line of darkened windows<\/u><\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

After presenting relevant data and information, Thompson gave his acronym in fighting COVID-19: SAFE<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n

Social distancing<\/b><\/strong>: This one you probably knew before you read this article. Keep a healthy distance between yourself and others \u2014 six feet is a good general rule \u2014 especially when you are near them for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n

Airflow awareness<\/b><\/strong>: Every noncontact activity \u2014 talking, eating, working out \u2014 becomes significantly safer when you take it outside. As the previously mentioned\u00a0Japanese study<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Hong Kong survey<\/a>\u00a0indicated, the odds of transmission in a closed, indoor space are several orders of magnitude higher than in open-air environments.<\/p>\n

Face masks<\/b><\/strong>: Wear them. They\u2019re not just for you;\u00a0they\u2019re for everybody around you<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Expectoration<\/b><\/strong>: COVID-19 appears to spread both through large-droplet transmission, such as from sneezes, and through the airborne transmission of smaller, aerosolized droplets, such as those that spray out of the mouths of talkers. Beware especially of indoor environments and activities that naturally include lots of gabbing (such as a long office meeting), singing (such as a choir practice), shouting (such as a high-school gym), or heavy breathing (such as\u00a0an intense indoor workout class<\/a>).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If one believes in the advices of Thompson, he\/she may now choose outdoors whenever possible. Therefore, in choosing venues for seminars, trainings and several activities; he\/she now wisely prefers facilities that have open air function rooms, have enough spaces to allow physical distancing, have farms\/gardens that offer refreshing views, offer immune-boasting foods and drinks, and employ disinfection and prevention techniques and methods.<\/p>\n
