The Foundation for the Development of Agusanons, Inc. (FDAI) hosted the work immersion of Grade 12 Students of two High Schools in the Province of Agusan del Sur, namely: Agusan del Sur Science High School, Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur and Maharlika High School, Maharlika, Talacogon, Agusan del Sur.<\/p>\n

The work immersionits stayed at Hygeia IntegraMeds Center, one of several projects of FDAI. Printed below is the reflection of one immersionist, Marnel P. Monte\u00a0of Agusan del Sur National Science High School. The piece shows how important and relevant the experiences of work immersionists at Hygeia.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 It was <\/i><\/em>on <\/i><\/em>December 3, 2017 when I, together with my 15 batchmates<\/i><\/em>,<\/i><\/em>\u00a0were assigned <\/i><\/em>at<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Hygeia Integra<\/i><\/em>M<\/i><\/em>eds<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Center, Patin-ay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur<\/i><\/em>\u00a0for our work immersion<\/i><\/em>,<\/i><\/em>\u00a0which is one of the course requirements for graduation. I was so happy when I saw my name as one of the chosen students to spend eight <\/i><\/em>(8) <\/i><\/em>Fridays <\/i><\/em>at<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Hygeia Integra<\/i><\/em>M<\/i><\/em>eds<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Center<\/i><\/em>. For I kn<\/i><\/em>e<\/i><\/em>w that in Hygeia, I w<\/i><\/em>ould<\/i><\/em>\u00a0learn many necessary things that w<\/i><\/em>ould<\/i><\/em>\u00a0be <\/i><\/em>of <\/i><\/em>great help not only for my future career but also for my everyday living.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The first time I visited Hygeia Integra<\/i><\/em>M<\/i><\/em>eds<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Center<\/i><\/em>\u00a0was during our SciKamp 2017. I was so much pleased with the ambiance of the place and the way the staff welcomed our school. They really welcome<\/i><\/em>d<\/i><\/em>\u00a0us with open arms. I was so amazed by the number of medicin<\/i><\/em>al herbs<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and the products that were presented to us. <\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 For e<\/i><\/em>very Friday that I spen<\/i><\/em>t<\/i><\/em>\u00a0<\/i><\/em>at<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Hygeia Integrameds, I c<\/i><\/em>ould<\/i><\/em>\u00a0say that it was one of the most productive Fridays that I<\/i><\/em>\u2019<\/i><\/em>ve<\/i><\/em>\u00a0has<\/i><\/em>\u00a0every week. These were the fridays where I learned the process of formulating organic pesticide<\/i><\/em>s<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and fertilizers<\/i><\/em>, namely<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Fish Amino Acid (FAA), Fermented Fruit Juice (FFJ), Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ), and Oriental Herbal Nutrient (OHN). I was so fascinated by these products for they were made from organic materials. <\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0We cannot deny that <\/i><\/em>s<\/i><\/em>ynthetic products were the trend for farmers since it was like a shortcut for killing the invading pests that decrease crop\u2019s production. But on the other hand, we cannot also rebuff that these <\/i><\/em>s<\/i><\/em>ynthetic products are the roots of a number of diseases that kill<\/i><\/em>\u00a0<\/i><\/em>hundreds of people every day and harm our environment. <\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Agriculture has been a major livelihood in the places in Mindanao especially Agusan del Sur. Farming is the primary source of income in most of the people living in the area. But in today\u2019s time, farmers who are following the synthetic way of farming are increasing which contributes to some negative effects in the soil composition and others. \u00a0Learning the process in making organic pesticide<\/i><\/em>s\/fertilizers<\/i><\/em>\u00a0was a great treasure for me <\/i><\/em>as<\/i><\/em>\u00a0it is the key to decrease harm that <\/i><\/em>is <\/i><\/em>caused by toxic chemicals<\/i><\/em>\u00a0used in modern farming<\/i><\/em>.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Staying in Hygeia also gave me many opportunities. First was to know the process in making organic pesticide<\/i><\/em>s<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and fertilizers <\/i><\/em>that<\/i><\/em>\u00a0was a great help for the conduct of my research<\/i><\/em>, <\/i><\/em>\u00a0which is also a requirement for my graduation. Since I was also making organic pesticide in my study, learning about the process, its application, and its composition is a huge help. Because now, I have thoroughly underst<\/i><\/em>oo<\/i><\/em>d how organic pesticide works.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Second was knowing medicin<\/i><\/em>al herbs<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and <\/i><\/em>their <\/i><\/em>uses. I never thought that the plants I see as decorations and weeds in our backyard can cure illnesses. I only heard the names of some medicinal plant<\/i><\/em>s<\/i><\/em>\u00a0but I haven\u2019t seen them personally. Hygeia gave me the opportunity to study and see them. <\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Third, aside from the healthy way of living and the preservation of the traditional planting of crops, we were also thought about the most important thing a human being must possess \u2013 values. In Hygeia, they don\u2019t just focus in organic farming and cultivating medicin<\/i><\/em>al herbs<\/i><\/em>. They <\/i><\/em>also<\/i><\/em>\u00a0advocate for the protection of children and women <\/i><\/em>who <\/i><\/em>are very vulnerable<\/i><\/em>\u00a0and need <\/i><\/em>utmost protection a community could give. <\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 A child is one of the most important members of a society. They are the society\u2019s most valuable treasures. Since, in the future, they will be the one to continue the culture, take care of Mother Nature, and make their own legacies. Hence, it is very important to know what are the rights of children as well as how to protect them from <\/i><\/em>abuse<\/i><\/em>rs.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 We <\/i><\/em>discuss<\/i><\/em>ed about <\/i><\/em>g<\/i><\/em>ender equality, protection of the rights of children, and values. <\/i><\/em>They were<\/i><\/em>\u00a0significant topic<\/i><\/em>s<\/i><\/em>\u00a0for us since some of us are still considered children. Safe touch, confusing touch, and other kinds of touch were introduced to us<\/i><\/em>;<\/i><\/em>\u00a0which <\/i><\/em>are<\/i><\/em>\u00a0very important knowledge we must possess. These things would really be a great help for us to shield ourselves as well <\/i><\/em>as <\/i><\/em>the children in our community.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Aside from the interesting topics and activities that were prepared, everything became more exciting because of our interaction with the A<\/i><\/em>gricultural <\/i><\/em>T<\/i><\/em>raining <\/i><\/em>I<\/i><\/em>nstitutes (ATI)<\/i><\/em>\u00a0<\/i><\/em>scholars<\/i><\/em>\u00a0from the different parts of Caraga <\/i><\/em>R<\/i><\/em>egion <\/i><\/em>who<\/i><\/em>\u00a0<\/i><\/em>would stay at<\/i><\/em>\u00a0Hygeia <\/i><\/em>for six (6) months <\/i><\/em>to study organic farming. It was so fun interacting with them because they speak different dialects and possess different culture. Having a conversation with them is like having a tour around Caraga.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Above all this, I would like to thank Dr. Rex <\/i><\/em>T<\/i><\/em>. Linao for granting our request to do our immersion in Hygeia and for taking good care of us while we spend our Fridays there. It was a great privilege to learn, interact, and witness the organic way of living. <\/i><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 To Kuya Eli, thank you for sharing us your time and your effort<\/i><\/em>s<\/i><\/em>\u00a0in teaching us about the process and the significance of organic pesticides and fertilizers. It was also <\/i><\/em>a <\/i><\/em>privilege hearing your inspirational journey all around the Philippines.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n
